I think Sarah Palin would make an excellent Secretary of State actually, what with all her foreign policy experience.

If politicians like Palin and Scott Brown are appealing because they seem like 'just folks' or 'D.C. outsiders' or whatever, maybe we should crowdsource government and have ordinary citizens participate based on a lottery system.

In theory, the 60-vote requirement in the Senate encourages stability by keeping legislative progress intentionally slow; legislation that passes must be widely-supported and more moderate than it would be otherwise. Unfortunately, the reality today is that each legislator, rather than reviewing each potential law independently and taking into consideration the will and best interests of their constituents, instead is too strongly influenced by the their political party. Too often the votes are split along party lines; the only explanation being that the interests of the party (and each legislator's security within it) is taking precedence over the interests of the people.

Elected representatives have become more focused on guaranteeing their own reelection than actually representing and serving the public. Additional evidence of this is the increasingly earlier start to each campaign cycle. Palin and others began essentially campaigning for 2012 as soon as the 2008 election concluded; thus we're reaching the point when politicians spend all their time working on their own election/reelection and attempting to undermine that of their opponents, even if it means voting in ways which are so clearly opposed to public opinion and the public interest.

When self-interest replaces public interest in government, its effectiveness is lost and its self-destruction assured. A revolution of some type is quickly becoming a necessity.

As for Palin, I'm hoping that my impression of her unelectability is correct. Her actions -- everything from resigning her Governership to her ridiculous hand-written (literally) notes -- make her seem incompetent and irresponsible to all but the conservative base. Her speeches lack specifics of any kind, simply referring instead to needing to cut taxes, create jobs, etc (in other words, the same generic points as always). Independents won't be swayed by this or by her snarky attitude, as this recent poll indicates.

I think what is more likely is that she could be appointed to a Republican cabinet or other government position. In a way, this could be even worse due to less visibility of such a position -- can you imagine her as head of the EPA? My only hope is that she continues to alienate the majority of the US population through her "maverick" behavior, to the point that association with her becomes too politically toxic, even for Republicans.

Anyway, thanks for the thought-provoking post, and I apologize for rambling on so much in this comment.

I accidentally deleted my WordPress database and had to start over with an older one, so I lost those few posts that were basically embarrassing and that I don't care to share with the world anymore. Also, I have been working on fixing this thing, so I know everything doesn't display properly and I hate you.
